We know that the East London Line development was essentially a civil engineering project; however, it needed a lot of construction know how to make it work. This was a large scale project that offered up some real challenges to the Carrillion and Balfour Beatty teams.
October 11 - Long Awaited Construction Act Amendments
November 8 - Converting Waste to Energy
A building creates a lot of waste - why not turn this into energy for the building itself? They do it in New York. Isn't it about time we explored ways of doing this as a first principle in building design right now? Of course. This session should provide a great heads up on how this can be achieved.
July 12 - Building Visit: Efficient & Renewable Energy
A visit to London South Bank University to look at their Cereb programme that addresses the creation of Efficient & Renewable Energy. A very practical and inspirational site visit.

This event will be a joint building visit with Constructing Excellence. A new format for the club which should see some very useful cross pollination of ideas within the Constructing Excellence framework.
May 10 - Practical Social Networking & Media in Construction (Past event)
Last year Paul Wilkinson (PR, Marketing & Construction IT Specialist) provided an excellent overview of Social Networking & Media, what it could do and how it could be used to effect. The feedback was for more so Paul is returning to show how Social Media has been to put to Practical everyday use in Construction.
The speakers will include Robert Klaschka and Philippa Grantham from architects Studio Klaschka. The insight gained from understanding how Social Networking & Media is actually used in real life everyday construction situations will promote lively discussion!
The LCEC video blog, http://londoncec.blogspot.com was nominated for two Be2Camp awards. Be2Camp is the very successful Social Media based network group founded by Paul Wilkinson to promote Social Media in the Built Environment.
If you want to keep up and in touch with the latest in these fast moving constantly evolving technologies then this is an event not to be missed.

April 12 - The Retrofit Challenge (Past event)
LESSONS LEARNT FROM DOMESTIC AND COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS
The Energy Bill introduced to Parliament on 8 December 2010 includes provision for a new “Green Deal”, which the government believes will revolutionise the energy efficiency of British properties. Many of us have already embarked on low carbon retrofit projects across the built environment and this session provides the opportunity to examine some of the lessons that have been learned and emerging good practice.
We are delighted to welcome two very different examples of recently completed retrofit projects from the domestic and commercial sectors. The first part of the evening will showcase an East Thames Group domestic retrofit project in Beckton, which was completed without relocating the resident. The project was selected as part of the recent ‘Retrofit for the Future’ competition being funded from the Technology Strategy Board. Both the age and orientation of the property represent a significant challenge when attempting to meet an 80% reduction in energy use. Stephen Gray, Head of Sustainability at Lakehouse and a representative from Penoyre & Prasad LLP will be discussing lessons learnt from the project.
The second presentation will be from Cyril Sweett who will identify a simple and structured approach to low carbon retrofitting in the non- domestic sector. The retrofit strategies described will identify a range of opportunities to improve building performance, significantly reduce carbon emissions and make real savings on energy bills. In conjunction with Elmhurst Energy, Cyril Sweett recently completed a study on behalf of Kingspan which examined the potential improvements and savings from retrofitting four existing case study buildings. The work also looked at the impact of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme and Feed-in Tariffs. The findings of this study will be presented by Richard Quartermaine, Associate Director in Cyril Sweett’s Sustainability team.
Tuesday 12 April 2011, 18.00 for 18.30 start at London Capital Club, 15 Abchurch Lane, London EC4N 7BW. Abchurch Lane is situated between King William Street and Cannon Street and is very close to Bank, Cannon Street and Monument Stations.

March 8 - BIM Panel (Past event)

Paul Morrell, the Chief Construction Advisor, has publically stated that he is minded to mandate BIM for central Government contracts within five years and this desire is published as a recommendation within the recent IGT report. Constructing Excellence members are urged to ensure that they have the capacity to respond to this challenge.
We have assembled a panel of BIM champions including an architect, a contractor, a consulting engineer and a communications specialist, who are using BIM on live projects and who are involved on pan-industry BIM user groups for establishing protocols and best practice, to give you their thoughts and answer any questions you may have.
Hear their thoughts on what’s good about BIM, where it isn’t working, and how it needs to be developed in the future.
Come armed with your questions. We would be grateful to receive any questions in advance. Please e-mail them to: click here to email Róisín Fogarty
We are at the Capital Club in Abchurch Lane on the 8th February, 6 for 6.30pm.
Attendance is free for members of LCEC.
A charge of £10 will be made at the door for non-members.
